The Body Keeps a Record
What happens to a person doesn't stay in memory alone, the body itself stores it, in ways that show up in physical health long after the event that caused it is over.
Try this
- When someone describes an ongoing physical symptom, consider asking gently what else has been happening in their life recently, not to replace medical evaluation, but alongside it.
- If you're supporting someone through a difficult period, don't be surprised if physical symptoms (sleep, appetite, tension) show up alongside emotional ones, that's a documented pattern, not a sign something separate is wrong.
- Notice your own body's response during or after a stressful period, and treat physical rest and recovery as seriously as you'd treat emotional processing, they're connected, not separate tasks.
Explain it to a child
Have you ever had a stomach ache before a big test, even though nothing was actually wrong with your stomach? That's your body and your feelings talking to each other. When something scary or hard happens, your body sometimes remembers it too, not just your mind, that's why you might feel tired, or your tummy might hurt, even after the scary thing is over. It doesn't mean anything is broken. It just means your body cares about what happens to you, and it's okay to tell a grown-up you trust if your body feels strange after something hard happens, so they can help you feel better.
What it means
It's tempting to treat physical health and lived experience as separate categories, as if stress, fear, or trauma live only in the mind, and the body is a neutral machine unaffected by what a person has been through. The evidence doesn't support that separation. This principle exists to test whether a system accounts for the physical, embodied cost of what people actually experience, rather than treating psychological history as irrelevant to physical outcomes.

In nature
A well-documented, though still actively researched, 2013 study offers a striking non-human example of experience leaving a physical trace beyond memory. Researchers at Emory University trained male mice to fear the smell of cherry blossoms by pairing the scent with a mild foot shock. The offspring of these mice, who had never smelled the scent or experienced the shock themselves, showed heightened sensitivity and startle response to that same specific smell, along with measurably larger brain structures devoted to detecting it, changes traced to chemical modifications on the relevant odor-receptor gene passed through sperm.
Honesty flag, kept in the record
this is one well-conducted study, and transgenerational epigenetic inheritance remains a genuinely active, somewhat unsettled area of research, particularly regarding how reliably it extends to more complex mammals. What it does establish clearly is that an experience can leave a specific, measurable physical trace that persists beyond the individual who had the experience, not just "the body remembers," but in this case, something like the next generation's body does too.
What the science says
The clearest, most rigorously established human evidence for this principle comes from the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study, led by Vincent Felitti and Robert Anda starting in the 1990s, surveying over 17,000 adults. The study found a strong, dose-dependent relationship between childhood adversity, abuse, neglect, household dysfunction, and adult physical health outcomes decades later, not just psychological ones: adults who had experienced four or more ACE categories showed roughly 12 times higher rates of health risks including substance use and suicide attempts, alongside significantly elevated risk for heart disease, and this dose-response relationship (more adversity, worse outcomes) has been independently replicated across dozens of subsequent studies over more than two decades.
Related research on epigenetics adds a biological mechanism to this pattern. Rachel Yehuda's research on descendants of Holocaust survivors found measurable differences in stress-hormone regulation, specifically, altered methylation patterns on a gene (FKBP5) that helps regulate the body's cortisol response, in both survivors and, differently, their children. Honesty flag: this specific study involved only 32 survivors and 22 offspring, a small sample that critics have noted makes the findings suggestive rather than conclusive, and researchers in the field are explicit that separating a genuinely biological, inherited mechanism from other explanations (a parent's altered behavior shaping a child's development, for instance) remains genuinely difficult in human studies. The pattern is real and published in serious peer-reviewed venues, but "trauma is epigenetically inherited" is a stronger claim than the current evidence fully settles.
One further, popular framework is worth naming and flagging carefully: polyvagal theory, developed by Stephen Porges, proposes that the vagus nerve's structure explains how trauma gets stored in nervous-system states, and it has shaped a great deal of trauma therapy practice. As of early 2026, this theory is in genuine, serious scientific dispute, a comprehensive critique published by 39 researchers concluded several of its core neurophysiological and evolutionary claims aren't defensible against current evidence, while clinicians who use it in practice report it still captures something clinically real and useful, even if its specific anatomical claims don't hold up. This document treats polyvagal theory as a contested clinical framework, not settled neuroscience, useful to know it's being discussed, not something to state as established fact.
Ancient wisdom
Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, developed independently in China and India respectively over roughly two millennia, both built entire medical systems on a premise modern medicine only recently caught up to: that emotional and physical health are structurally connected, not separate categories requiring separate treatment. Traditional Chinese Medicine's classical texts, including the Huangdi Neijing already referenced in Principle 6, describe specific emotional states as directly affecting specific organ systems, a framework distinct from and predating modern psychosomatic medicine by centuries, developed from careful clinical observation rather than controlled experiment. Ayurveda similarly treats mental and emotional states (described through the doshas) as inseparable from physical constitution and disease, prescribing treatment that addresses both together rather than referring "the mental part" elsewhere. Neither tradition had access to cortisol assays or methylation studies, but both arrived, through generations of clinical observation, at the same structural claim now being independently confirmed by ACE Study data and stress-hormone research: what happens to a person doesn't stay contained in one part of them.
History
World War I produced one of the starkest historical illustrations of this principle, precisely because doctors at the time didn't yet have a framework for it. British soldiers returned from trench warfare with severe physical symptoms, uncontrollable tremors, sudden blindness, paralysis, inability to speak or walk, with no corresponding physical wound to explain them. By December 1914, as many as 10% of British officers and 4% of enlisted men were reporting these symptoms, which came to be called "shell shock," initially theorized as physical concussive brain damage from nearby explosions. The British Army documented roughly 80,000 such cases by the war's end.
What makes this history particularly relevant to this principle is the confusion it caused precisely because it didn't fit the available categories: doctors debated for years whether shell shock was a physical injury or a psychological one, and the treatments that followed reflected that confusion, some soldiers were treated with brutal electroshock therapy explicitly aimed at their physical symptoms alone, with roughly 80% of such patients unable to return to service regardless. It took another physician working with soldiers, W.H.R. Rivers, treating patients through conversation about the emotional roots of their symptoms rather than only their physical presentation, to demonstrate that the two weren't actually separable. The condition wasn't formally recognized as a genuine psychiatric diagnosis (eventually PTSD) until 1980, meaning it took over sixty years, and vast unnecessary suffering in the interim, for medicine to fully accept what shell-shocked soldiers' bodies had been demonstrating the entire time: what a person has lived through doesn't stay confined to memory, it shows up physically, and treating the physical symptom alone without the underlying experience often didn't work.
In practice
Individual scale
People recovering from significant stress or difficult life periods commonly report physical symptoms alongside the emotional ones, disrupted sleep, muscle tension, digestive changes, fatigue that doesn't resolve with rest, even when no separate physical illness is present. This is a widely reported clinical pattern consistent with the ACE Study and stress-hormone research already established, though as with other practical-experience claims across this document, individual accounts vary and this shouldn't be read as meaning every physical symptom during a stressful period is necessarily stress-caused.
Clinical/therapeutic scale
Trauma-informed medical and therapeutic practice, now standard guidance in many healthcare and social service settings, starts from the premise that a patient's physical presentation may be connected to unaddressed past experience, and asks about history accordingly, rather than treating physical symptoms in isolation from a patient's life history. This shift in clinical practice followed directly from the accumulated evidence base of research like the ACE Study.
Community/social scale
Communities that have experienced collective trauma, natural disasters, violence, displacement, frequently show elevated rates of physical health problems across the population, not just psychological ones, well after the triggering event has passed, consistent with the same body-level mechanism operating at a population scale rather than only an individual one.
What argues against it
The evidence that experience affects the body doesn't mean every physical symptom has a psychological cause, and treating it that way can cause real harm. Overcorrecting toward "the body keeps score" as a universal explanation risks two distinct failures: it can lead people, or clinicians, to attribute a genuine, separately treatable physical illness to unresolved trauma and delay appropriate medical care, and it can place an unfair burden on people already carrying difficult experiences, implying their physical illness is somehow their emotional fault or an unprocessed feeling rather than simply an illness like anyone else's.
The polyvagal theory controversy already noted in Modern Science is a caution about this same overreach at the level of a whole clinical framework: a theory can genuinely help people in practice while its specific scientific claims turn out not to hold up, and conflating clinical usefulness with scientific proof is itself a kind of error this principle needs to guard against, not just endorse uncritically. The honest position is narrower than "the body remembers everything", it's that experience is one real, evidenced contributor to physical health outcomes, among others, and it deserves serious consideration without becoming the default explanation for every symptom.
Where that leaves us
Across the ACE Study, epigenetic stress-hormone research, and the century-long struggle to recognize shell shock as a legitimate injury, the same underlying fact holds: lived experience, particularly difficult or traumatic experience, leaves a measurable trace in the body, not only in memory, and that trace can affect physical health outcomes for years or decades afterward.
This principle sits in genuine tension with its own counter-argument. The evidence for a real connection between experience and physical health is strong and well-replicated (ACE Study); the evidence for exactly how that connection works, and how far it extends, is much less settled (small-sample epigenetics research, contested polyvagal theory). The historically costly mistake, shell-shocked soldiers treated with electroshock instead of care for the underlying experience, came from ignoring the connection entirely. The mistake this principle now has to guard against is the opposite: treating every physical symptom as evidence of hidden psychological cause, which is its own form of harm.
The strongest, most defensible version of this principle isn't "the body remembers everything perfectly", it's that a person's physical health can't be fully understood in isolation from what they've actually lived through, and a system, clinician, or institution that refuses to ask about that history is working with an incomplete picture, even while the exact mechanism connecting the two remains an active area of real scientific inquiry rather than settled fact.
Open questions
- Shell shock took over sixty years to be recognized as a legitimate condition rather than weakness or malingering. What current physical conditions might be experiencing a similar, still-unrecognized connection to lived experience that medicine hasn't caught up to yet?
- The epigenetic inheritance research (mice, Holocaust descendants) suggests experience might affect not just the person who lived it, but their children. If this holds up under further research, what responsibility, if any, does that create for how societies address collective trauma, is inherited biological effect a stronger argument for intervention than psychological effect alone, or does it not actually change the ethical calculus?
- Given the real risk of overcorrection (attributing physical illness to psychological cause too readily), how should a clinician, or this document itself, calibrate between taking the mind-body connection seriously and not overusing it as an explanation?
- Polyvagal theory remains clinically useful to many practitioners despite serious scientific challenge to its foundations. Is there a meaningful difference between "this framework helps people in practice" and "this framework is true," and should a document like this one treat those two claims differently going forward?
